The second
pillar/ article of faith in Islam is the belief in the angels. Angels are a
part of the world of the “Unseen” which we cannot comprehend. The belief in
unseen is the first characteristic of the righteous believers; because
it distinguishes them from the
atheists who want a concrete materialistic physical proof to believe.
Who believe in
the unseen, establish prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them,
And who believe
in what has been revealed to you, [O Muhammad], and what was revealed before
you, and of the Hereafter they are certain [in faith]. (2:2-3)
Physical
Characteristics
Angels are
celestial spiritual beings that cannot be perceived by sensory organs, and they
were created from light before creating the human beings.
'A'isha reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said:
The angels were created from light, just as the jinn were
created from smokeless fire and Adam was created from what you have been told
about (in the Qur'an)’ (i. e. he is fashioned out of clay).
Sahih Muslim 2996 - Book 55, Hadith 78
Quran informed us that the angels have
wings. Some of them have two wings, some have three or four, and some have more
than that.
[All] praise is [due] to Allah , Creator of
the heavens and the earth, [who] made the angels messengers having wings, two
or three or four. He increases in creation what He wills. Indeed, Allah is over
all things competent. (35:1)
Angels are able to take human form, like
Gabriel came in human form to announce to Mary, mother of Jesus, the God’s
message.
And mention, [O
Muhammad], in the Book [the story of] Mary, when she withdrew from her family
to a place toward the east.
And she took, in
seclusion from them, a screen. Then We sent to her Our Angel, and he
represented himself to her as a well-proportioned man.
She said,
"Indeed, I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, [so leave me], if
you should be fearing of Allah ."
He said, "I
am only the messenger of your Lord to give you [news of] a pure boy." (19:16-19)
Angels also came in human form to
Prophets Abraham, Lot, and Muhammad. Even the companions of Prophet Muhammad
saw the angel Gabriel in human form.
And certainly
did Our messengers come to Abraham with good tidings; they said,
"Peace." He said, "Peace," and did not delay in bringing
[them] a roasted calf.
But when he saw
their hands not reaching for it, he distrusted them and felt from them
apprehension. They said, "Fear not. We have been sent to the people of
Lot." (11:69-70)
Mental Characteristics
Unlike humans or jinn, Angels lack free
will; because they do not have reason, and they have no biological needs and
therefore no lower desires predicted by the natural world. So they are not
subject to temptation. They just strictly obey God's commands.
They
do not disobey God in what He commands them but do what they are commanded.
(66:6)
The angels
opposed creating the human being because they predicted that the human being
will cause corruption on the earth and shed blood. But they did not have any
choice to prostrate to Adam or not when God commanded them.
And [mention, O
Muhammad], when your Lord said to the angels, "Indeed, I will make upon
the earth a successive authority." They said, "Will You place upon it
one who causes corruption therein and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise
and sanctify You?" Allah said, "Indeed, I know that which you do not
know."
And
He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and
said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."
They
said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught
us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise."
He
said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed
them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen
[aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you
have concealed."
And [mention]
when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they
prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the
disbelievers.
Their
Tasks
They are
delegated different tasks to perform. For example, the angel Gabriel (Jibreel)
is called the Holy Spirit
because he is the source of prophetic or divine revelation, and responsible for
carrying the revelations to prophets.
Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel - it is [none but]
he who has brought the Qur'an down upon your heart, [O Muhammad], by permission
of Allah , confirming that which was before it and as guidance and good tidings
for the believers." (2:97)
And:
And We did
certainly give Moses the Torah and followed up after him with messengers. And
We gave Jesus, the son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the holy
Spirit. (2:87)
Beside Gabriel,
Quran mentioned other angels, such as Mikal (Michael)
Whoever is an
enemy to Allah and His angels and His messengers and Gabriel and Michael - then
indeed, Allah is an enemy to the disbelievers. (2:98)
The
angel of death is responsible for parting the soul from the body of the dead.
Say,
"The angel of death will take you who has been entrusted with you. Then to
your Lord you will be returned." (32:11)
Angels
of punishment (Zabaniyya) are Guardians of Hell.
The guardian angels (Hafaza) help the person
fight attacks from the Devils and demons, and keep people from death until its
decreed time and who bring down blessings.
And He is the subjugator over His servants, and He sends
over you guardian-angels until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers
take him, and they do not fail [in their duties]. (6:61)
For each one are successive [angels] before and behind him who
protect him by the decree of Allah . (13:11)
Also, they keep track of every good and
bad deed that each person performs in their books. On the Day of Judgment, they
will be used to determine if this person is worthy of admission into paradise.
There is no soul
but that it has over it a protector. 86:4
and
And
indeed, [appointed] over you are keepers, Noble and
recording; They know whatever you do. (82:10-12)
Jinn
In addition to the angels, we believe in the existence of
another invisible creature, which is Jinn. While the angels were created from
light, the Jinn were created from fire.
And He created the jinn from a smokeless
flame of fire. (55:15)
Maybe the angels were created from the light of fire, and the
Jinn were created from the flame of fire. Unlike angles, Jinn have the freedom
of choice, so there are believer Jinn and disbeliever Jinn. The disbeliever Jinn
are called devils or demons. They are descendants or helpers of the Devil
(Satan). God warned us of them, because they tempt humans to sin and cause
despair and doubt.
And
[mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate to Adam," and they
prostrated, except for Satan (Iblees). He
was of the jinn and departed from the command of his Lord. Then will you take
him and his descendants as allies other than Me while they are enemies to you?
Wretched it is for the wrongdoers as an exchange. (18:50)
Whisperings of demons may enter the hearts of humans,
especially in states of strong emotion like depression or anger.
There is a complete chapter (surah) in the Qur'an called (The
Jinn). This chapter informs us that Prophet Muhammad was not sent as a prophet
only to all the human beings, but also to the jinn.
Say,
[O Muhammad], "It has been revealed to me that a group of the jinn
listened and said, 'Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an.
It guides to the right course, and we have believed in it. And we will never
associate with our Lord anyone. And [it teaches] that exalted
is the nobleness of our Lord; He has not taken a wife or a son.
And that our foolish one has been saying about Allah an excessive
transgression. And we had thought that mankind and the jinn
would never speak about Allah a lie. And there were men from
mankind who sought refuge in men from the jinn, so they [only] increased them
in burden. And they had thought, as you thought, that Allah
would never send anyone [as a messenger]. And we have sought
[to reach] the heaven but found it filled with powerful guards and burning
flames. And we used to sit therein in positions for hearing,
but whoever listens now will find a burning flame lying in wait for him. And we do not know [therefore] whether evil is intended for
those on earth or whether their Lord intends for them a right course. And among us are the righteous, and among us are [others] not
so; we were [of] divided ways. And we have become certain
that we will never cause failure to Allah upon earth, nor can we escape Him by
flight. And when we heard the guidance, we believed in it.
And whoever believes in his Lord will not fear deprivation or burden. And among us are Muslims [in submission to Allah ], and among
us are the unjust. And whoever has become Muslim - those have sought out the
right course. But as for the unjust, they will be, for
Hell, firewood.' (72:1-15)
In addition, qur’anic discourse, in many parts, was addressed
to both the human beings and the jinn, as the second person or the hearer.
O company of jinn and mankind, if you are able to pass beyond the regions
of the heavens and the earth, then pass. You will not pass except by authority
[from Allah ].
So which of the favors of your Lord would you deny? (55:33-34)
Actually, God created both for the same purpose.
I do not want from them any provision, nor do I want them to feed
Me.
God subjected the Jinn to the prophet Solomon to build and dive for him.
And gathered for Solomon were his soldiers of the jinn and men and
birds, and they were [marching] in rows. (27:17)
Prophet Solomon died while he was leaning on his stick. As he
remained upright, propped on his stick, the jinn thought he was still alive and
supervising them, so they continued to work, until a bug ate Solomon's stick
and then his body collapsed, so the Jinn realized that he was died.
And to Solomon [We subjected] the wind - its morning [journey was
that of] a month - and its afternoon [journey was that of] a month, and We made
flow for him a spring of [liquid] copper. And among the jinn were those who
worked for him by the permission of his Lord. And whoever deviated among them
from Our command - We will make him taste of the punishment of the Blaze.
Some Muslims believe in some superstitions
about Jinn, such as that jinn can enter human bodies, they have amorous affairs
with humans, or somebody saw them. But the Quran states that no person can see
the jinn.
O children of Adam, let not Satan
tempt you as he removed your parents from Paradise, stripping them of their
clothing to show them their private parts. Indeed, he sees you, he and his
tribe, from where you do not see them. Indeed, We have made the devils allies
to those who do not believe. (7:27)
Satan
Like
Adam is the father of human beings, Satan (Iblis) is the father
of devils or demons (disbeliever Jinn). Satan was with Angels in the heaven when God commanded them
to prostrate to Adam, but he did not prostrate. So he disobeyed God, and Quran
considered that as disbelieving in God. So disbelieving in God is not just to
deny His existence, but also disobeying Him.
But why were
angels commanded to prostrate to Adam? It might be to uncover the haughtiness
of the Iblis, or because human are thought to rank higher than angels. Humans supremacy,
is due to that human is able to evolve and therefore overcome his flaws,
although they, unlike angles, shed blood.
